Bonaboto cautions NDC against negligence on developmental projects
A development-focused think tank for the Upper East Region, Bonaboto, has cautioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against neglecting the developmental needs of the region after securing victory in all 15 constituencies.
In the just-ended 2024 General Elections, the NDC won the region with over 75% of the total votes cast, compared to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 22%.
Speaking to Citi News, the National President of Bonaboto, Professor Samuel Awinkine Atintono, warned that the NDC could face a fate similar to the NPP in future elections if they fail to address the region’s developmental challenges and lift residents out of poverty.
“I think this election is a lesson to everybody, even in the NPP stronghold, they lost. Nobody should take us for granted. We can switch if you don’t do what we want. Nobody should think that the Upper East is a done deal for NDC it is not the case. Winning the 15 seats is for a reason. It is about development if the people think that there is no development going on, why should they continue to vote for you.”
They should also be careful because there is a youthful kind of voters who do not tie their fortune to a party, it is about what you do for them. There is unemployment and they want the opportunities to do what they think can improve their life and if they do not get it, they will vote another way. For NDC, Ghana has spoken and they should not take us for granted,” he added.
Professor Atintono further urged all 15 Members of Parliament in the region to unite and prioritize the region’s collective developmental interests over individual constituencies or personal ambitions.
“Aside from legislation of making law, they must come together, it appears that they are not quite united. They need to come together so they can put together a solid point. For the past eight years, I haven’t seen any cabinet minister from the region, and I think this is an opportunity for them to be part of the government.
“They need to know that once you have won, the people are watching. They need to prioritize the needs of the people and once they are together, they can make one voice together and support the region in terms of development”.
